Everything riding in your caravan sits on eight steel parts per axle, each small enough to fit in your palm. Two tapered roller bearings per hub, spinning on a stationary spindle, carrying a couple of tonnes at 100 km/h in 40-degree heat. When they're greased and adjusted properly, they'll do that for years. When they're not, they fail quietly, and on a tandem-axle van you won't hear a thing from the driver's seat until the damage is done.

A few notes on reading that table. You'll sometimes see the Holden inner cone listed as LM67049 rather than LM67048; both numbers circulate in the Australian market, so trust the code engraved on your own cone over any list. The Ford inner cup comes in two versions (L68110 and L68111) with different outside diameters to suit different hub bores, which is why you match the cup to the hub, not to a catalogue. And "parallel" describes the spindle, not the bearing: a parallel axle has no stepped-down outer journal, so it runs the same larger bearing at both positions. Identifying yours takes two minutes. Pull a dust cap and read the number engraved on the outer bearing cone. If it's unreadable, measure the spindle shoulders with a vernier caliper: Holden spindles step from 31.75 mm at the inner seat to 19.05 mm at the outer, Ford spindles from 35 mm to 22 mm.
Quality matters more with bearings than with most trailer parts. AL-KO sells its premium kits specifically as Japanese bearings (Koyo, NTN or NSK depending on supply), and that's not marketing fluff. Two extra rules sit on top of the schedule. AL-KO's manuals require the bearings to be checked and adjusted every time the hub comes off for any reason, brakes included. And any suspect symptom (noise, heat, play) overrides the schedule immediately.

Warning signs between services
A caravan bearing usually telegraphs trouble before it fails, just not loudly. The signs worth acting on: grinding, rumbling or clicking from a wheel; play when you jack the wheel and rock it top and bottom; a hub noticeably hotter than its partner on the same axle after a run; grease streaks flung across the inside of the rim (a failed seal); uneven tyre wear on one position; or the van pulling under brakes.
Two quick checks cost nothing at a rest stop. Spin each caravan wheel by hand when it's jacked for any reason and listen for roughness. And lay the back of your hand near each hub after towing: warm is normal, painful to touch is not. Tools, parts and the right grease
A bearing service needs no specialist workshop gear. The full list: a jack and rated jack stands, wheel chocks, a wheel brace and torque wrench, multigrips or a hammer and flat screwdriver for the dust cap, pliers for the split pin, a drift or block of hardwood for seating the new seal, kerosene or degreaser and a container for cleaning, disposable gloves, rags, and fresh high-temperature bearing grease. A bearing packing tool is a nice-to-have; hands work fine. If the van has electric brakes, add a brake spoon or wide flat screwdriver for the adjuster.
Parts are cheap insurance. Superior Trailer Parts' 2025 cost breakdown puts standard bearing kits at $30 to $60 per wheel, with grease and split pins adding $15 to $25 across the job. Every service consumes a new grease seal per hub and a new split pin per spindle regardless of whether the bearings themselves go back in.
Grease deserves more attention than it usually gets. What you want is a lithium complex grease in NLGI 2 consistency rated for wheel bearing duty. Cruisemaster names Castrol LMX or equivalent in its service bulletin, and the Castrol data sheet shows why it suits the job: a 260°C dropping point and an operating range built for hubs that run hot under braking.
The rule most DIYers don't know: never mix grease families. Grease compatibility depends on the thickener, not the NLGI number, and lithium complex and calcium sulfonate greases are a documented incompatible pair, per Eaton's compatibility bulletin. Mixed greases can soften and let the base oil separate from the thickener, which quietly starves the bearing. If you don't know what's in the hub, or you're switching to a different grease type, clean everything back to bare metal and start fresh. How to repack caravan wheel bearings step by step
Safety first, because this job puts you next to a raised van. The ACCC's vehicle jacks guidance is blunt: a jack is for lifting, stands are for holding, and no part of your body goes near the underside of anything supported only by a jack. Work on firm level ground, chock the wheels staying on the ground, and lower the van onto rated stands before you touch a hub. The corner steadies and jockey wheel are stabilisers, not lifting points. If the van has electric brakes, disconnect the trailer plug so nothing can energise the magnets while you work.
Then, one hub at a time:
- Chock the opposite side, crack the wheel nuts, jack the van at the manufacturer's jacking point and set it on a stand. Remove the wheel.
- Prise off the dust cap with multigrips or a screwdriver worked around its rim.
- Straighten the split pin with pliers and pull it out. Bin it.
- Remove the castellated nut and thrust washer.
- Rock the drum slightly and the outer bearing will present itself. Set it somewhere clean.
- Slide the drum off the spindle. On electric-brake vans it may hang up on the shoes; back the brake adjuster off through the slot in the backing plate until the drum clears.
- From the back of the drum, lever out the grease seal and lift out the inner bearing. The seal is scrap; the bearing might not be.
- Wash both bearings, the nut, the washer and the drum centre in kerosene or degreaser until every trace of old grease is gone. Old grease hides the evidence you're about to inspect for.
- Dry the bearings completely and inspect them under good light, rollers and cups both. What you're looking for is covered in the next section. Any doubt, replace as a set.
- Wipe the spindle clean and check it for scoring or bluing while you're there.
- Pack each bearing by pressing grease into the wide end of the cage until it extrudes clean between the rollers on the far side, working around the full circumference. Gloves on; this is the messy part. A packing tool does the same job faster.
- Smear a film of grease on the cups and the spindle, seat the inner bearing in the back of the drum, and tap the new seal in flush using a hardwood block so it goes in square.
- Slide the drum onto the spindle, fit the outer bearing and thrust washer, and start the castellated nut by hand.
- Set the bearing preload as described below. This is the step that decides whether the job was a success.
- Fit a new split pin with the closed end seated in the nut's groove and one leg bent back over the spindle end, then tap the dust cap home around its edge.
Setting the preload
Preload is the tension the castellated nut puts on the bearings, and both directions of error are expensive. AL-KO's electric braked axles manual documents the method: turn the hub slowly to seat the bearings while tightening the nut until firm, then loosen the nut and re-tighten it by hand only, finger-tight, to the first notch that lines up with the hole in the spindle, and fit the split pin. Spinning the drum while you snug the nut works the grease through and lets the bearings seat properly; the final setting is deliberately done without a wrench.
The result should pass two checks. The drum spins freely for a couple of rotations before slowing to a stop. And with the wheel refitted on a couple of nuts, rocking it top and bottom gives a barely perceptible amount of play. RV Daily's service guide puts it plainly: no play at all means the nut is too tight, obvious rocking means too loose. That trace of play is by design. Timken, whose part numbers these bearings carry, specifies functioning end play of 0.025 to 0.127 mm for manually adjusted wheel bearings. You can't measure that without a dial indicator, but it explains why "fractionally loose" is correct and "firm with a wrench" is a cooked bearing waiting to happen.
Cruisemaster adds a useful field check for later: with the wheel jacked at the suspension arm's jacking point, excessive end play announces itself as an audible knock when you rock the wheel.
Torque the wheels, then check them again
Refit the wheel and torque the nuts to your axle or wheel manufacturer's specification. The figures printed in Australian caravan magazine guides sit around 125 to 130 Nm for common caravan studs, but the sticker on your van or the axle manual wins any argument. Then re-check the torque after the first 50 km of towing, and again at the intervals your manufacturer specifies; staged checks out to 1,000 km are common (Australian Off Road, for one, specifies 100, 300 and 1,000 km). Repack or replace? Reading the evidence
Cleaned and dried bearings tell you exactly what to do next, and the decision rule is simple: a bearing only goes back in if it looks close to new. Timken's trailer bearing guidance is the reference here. Replace the set if you find any of the following, on rollers or cups:
- Pitting: small craters in the running surface
- Spalling: metal flaking or chipping off the surface
- Heat discolouration: any blue or black tint means the bearing has run dangerously hot; it is scrap
- Rust, corrosion or water etching: grey-black staining left by moisture
- Rough spots you can feel when rotating the cone slowly in your hand
- Grease that came out contaminated: milky (water) or glittering (metal)
Three related calls while everything is apart. If a cup has spun loose in its hub bore, the hub itself is done; replacement hubs are cheap and come with new cups fitted. If the spindle shows scoring or bluing, the problem is above your pay grade and the axle needs professional attention before the van tows again. And check each wheel stud for movement; a loose stud needs professional attention, not a tighten.
The matched-set rule bears repeating because it's the most common shortcut: cups and cones are replaced together, always. New cones in worn cups inherit the old failure. And whatever you decide about the bearings, the seal and split pin are new, every time.
While the drum is off: give the brakes ten minutes
A bearing service on an electric-braked van is also your best look at the brakes all year, and skipping that look wastes the teardown. With the drum in your hands, check the friction surface for scoring and heat marks. Check the shoes for wear and cracking. Then look hard at the magnet face: a worn magnet shows friction material gone to the metal housing or exposed copper coil, and the armature surface inside the drum backs up the story with blue spots or grooves if things have been running hot, as the trailer brake specialists at BlackSeries document. A magnet in that state gets replaced, not watched.
RV Daily's workshop guide includes a live test worth doing at reassembly: have a helper apply the brake controller with the drum off and the plug connected, and confirm each magnet energises (it will grab something steel). After the drum goes back on and preload is set, adjust the brakes: spin the drum forwards while tightening the star-wheel adjuster until the shoes bite, then back it off until only a light scrape remains. Adjust while spinning forwards only; spinning backwards can trip the auto-reverse mechanism in some drum designs. Which way to go? If you're mechanically handy, the repack is a satisfying afternoon job and you'll know it was done properly. That said, there are two honest reasons to pay a professional. Preload is technique-sensitive, and a workshop does fifty of these a year. And if your van is under warranty, read the terms first: some manufacturers require servicing through authorised agents to keep extended warranties intact, even while listing bearing greasing among normal owner maintenance. Either way, the money conversation ends the same place: South Australia's RAA attended 1,363 caravan flat-tyre callouts between January 2020 and March 2025, and 65% of them were in country areas. Between services: watch the temperature
Every interval in this guide shares one weakness: a bearing can start failing the week after a perfect service. Grit past a seal on one beach trip, a nick from a water crossing, a cup that spun slightly. The traditional answer is the fuel-stop hand check, and it's a habit worth having: walk the van, hold the back of your hand near each hub, and investigate anything too hot to touch. Its limits are real, though. You only sample the temperature when you happen to stop, a hot brake drum sits millimetres from the hub and muddies the reading, and by the time a hub is painful to touch you're already into the warning zone. Mind your knuckles on a hot one.
There's a strong engineering precedent for doing this continuously instead.
