Every summer the same trip fills Australian caravan forums: a week on K'gari or Moreton, van in tow, tyres aired down, driving the low-tide bank with the windows open. Nobody comes home worrying about their wheel bearings.
They probably should. Salt water and beach sand damage caravan wheel bearings faster than almost anything else you can put them through. Salt corrodes the polished steel inside the hub. Fine sand grinds through the grease. And a hot hub cooling suddenly in a creek crossing can pull salt water past its own seals. None of this announces itself on the day. The damage shows up weeks later, usually as one hub running hotter than its mate, sometimes as a bearing that lets go 300 km from the nearest workshop.
Here's what actually happens inside your hubs on a beach trip, and what to do about it before the next one.
Why salt water destroys wheel bearings
A caravan wheel bearing is a set of hardened, polished steel rollers running between two machined rings, called races. The whole assembly depends on two things: surfaces that stay smooth, and grease that keeps a film between them. Salt water attacks both at once.
Salt turns moisture into an electrolyte
Plain water rusts steel slowly. Salt water is much quicker, because dissolved salt turns water into an electrolyte, which speeds up the electrochemical reaction that eats metal. Chloride ions also break down the thin oxide layer that normally protects steel surfaces, so the corrosion doesn't just sit on top. It digs in.
The result is pitting: small craters etched into the bearing race. Under load, every pit becomes a stress point. Pits grow into spalls, which are flakes of hardened steel lifting away from the surface, and a bearing that has started spalling is on borrowed time. The cruel part is that a salt-pitted bearing usually looks fine from the outside and sounds fine at highway speed. For a while.
You don't need to drive through waves for this to start, either. Club 4X4, the Australian 4WD insurer, points out that the salt content in beach sand is comparable to seawater itself. The damp sand packed against your hub faces after a day on the beach is salty and abrasive at the same time.
The vacuum effect: how water gets past good seals
Bearing seals are built to keep splash out, and mostly they do. What they can't fight is physics.
Tow for an hour and your hubs are warm at minimum, hot if you've been braking. Drive into a creek mouth or a washover and cold water chills the hub in seconds. The air and grease inside contract as they cool, and that contraction creates a partial vacuum inside the hub. The vacuum pulls water, salt and grit straight past the seal lip.
This is not forum folklore. Australian Off Road, which builds off-road caravans for exactly this kind of touring, warns in its owner's handbook that hot hub bearings "may be subject to water ingress through the axle seals if they are immersed in water", and tells owners to give bearings about 20 minutes to cool before a crossing deep enough to cover the axle. Never stop halfway through a crossing for the same reason: a stationary hot hub sitting in cold water is the worst case.
Boat trailer owners have known about this for decades. It's the entire reason bearing protectors exist.
What water does to grease
Grease is what holds the lubricating film between rollers and race. Water contamination emulsifies it, and emulsified grease loses film strength. Metal starts touching metal, friction climbs, and heat follows.
There's a simple visual check. Healthy bearing grease is smooth and consistent in colour. Water-contaminated grease turns milky, somewhere between grey and coffee-milkshake. If you pull a dust cap after a coastal trip and see that colour, water got in, and the bearing needs a strip-down and repack, not a top-up.
Beach trips aren't boat ramps: what transfers and what doesn't
Most saltwater bearing advice was written for boat trailers, because a boat trailer gets its hubs dunked at a ramp every single outing. Some of that advice transfers to caravans. Some of it doesn't.
Marine-grade grease transfers well. Greases built with water-resistant thickeners, calcium sulfonate being the common type, hold their film far better when moisture gets in. Check your suspension maker's specification before switching, though. Cruisemaster, for example, specifies Castrol LMX or equivalent, and mixing incompatible grease types causes its own problems.
The cooling habit transfers. Boaties let hubs cool at the ramp before launching. The 20-minute rule before axle-deep crossings is the caravan version.
Bearing protectors need more care. A Bearing Buddy style protector replaces the dust cap with a spring-loaded piston that keeps grease under slight positive pressure, about 3 psi, so a submerged hub can't form the vacuum that draws water in. On an unbraked boat trailer they're close to standard equipment. On a caravan, the brakes live inside the same drum as the bearing, and overfilling a protector can push grease past the inner seal and onto the brake shoes. If you run them, follow the fill instructions exactly and stop when the piston just moves.

After the beach: the three-scenario checklist
What you should do after a coastal trip depends on what your hubs went through.
1. Hubs went into salt water. A creek crossing, a washover, a misjudged tide run. AL-KO's caravan chassis handbook is blunt about this one: hub bearings should be regreased shortly after contact with water. Not at the next scheduled service. Soon. Salt sitting inside a bearing keeps corroding every day the van sits in the driveway.
2. Dry sand and spray only. Wash the van down with fresh water the same day, within 24 hours at the outside. Hose the wheels, hubs, brake backing plates, underbody and inside the chassis rails until the water runs clear. Keep high-pressure jets away from the seals themselves, because a pressure washer aimed at a seal lip does the one thing you're trying to prevent: it forces water past the seal. Then inspect at your next opportunity and bring the next bearing service forward.
3. A hub ran hot, or smells like burnt grease. Pull it down before the next trip, not after. Heat means the damage has already started, and bearings do not heal.
Service intervals when you tour the coast
The standard Australian guidance for caravan wheel bearings is a service every 12 months or 10,000 km, whichever comes first. For off-road or heavy use, workshops halve the time axis: every 6 months or 5,000 km. The pattern across all of them: 10,000 km is the ceiling, and the calendar side shrinks as conditions get harsher. Regular beach and coastal running counts as harsher. The early warning most owners never get
Salt damage is quiet. A pitted bearing runs rougher, so it runs hotter, and it does this for weeks before it fails. From the driver's seat at 90 km/h you feel none of it. That's the frustrating part: the information exists, as heat, at the hub. Most people just have no way to read it.
Two ways to catch it.
The hand test. At every stop, put the back of your hand near each hub. Warm is normal. Too hot to touch is a problem. Compare across the axle while you're there, because trailer monitoring guides treat one hub running roughly 11 to 14°C hotter than its mate as a sign of excess friction, and Australian Off Road notes that temperature differences between hubs can indicate exactly the kind of water ingress that repeated crossings cause. The hand test costs nothing. Its weakness is that it only works when you're stopped.
